Men’s Cross Country: Jarrett Moore Notches Dons Season-Best Time at Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree
While neither the men nor the women’s cross country team finished near the top of the team rankings at the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree, many Dons left their mark on the meet with impressive individual performances. It was also a good opportunity for the Dons to compete on the course that they will be visiting again in November for the NCAA West Regionals.
In the men’s 8,000-meter race, junior Jarrett Moore paced the Dons with a 36th-place finish. His time of 24:44 was his best of the year, and also the best for any USF male runner this year. He beat his times of 25.50.3 and 25:50 at the USF and Stanford Invitationals, where he finished in 12th and 13th place, respectively.
“Jarrett has become a very valuable leader up front this year,” assistant coach Chris Shane told USFdons.com. “He’s been pulling along the guys so far this season and is racing very solid.”
Following Moore in the standings was sophomore Nick Hicks, who crossed the finish line in 54th place with a season personal-best time of 25:04. 30 seconds later, freshman Tom Bradley completed the race to finish third for the Dons with a time of 25:34. He placed 79th out of the 134 competing runners.
Although the USF men finished in 13th place in the teams standings out of the 14 teams at the jamboree, the strong races from Moore, Hicks and Bradley are certainly promising signs of the team going forward. The Dons will attempt to expand upon the success of these three as they prepare for the San Francisco State Invitational on Oct. 11.
Only five USF women competed at the race in Sacramento while the rest of the team participated in the Notre Dame Invitational in Indiana. Among those running in the women’s 5,000-meter race at the Sacramento State Jamboree was junior Kailey Ulland, who scored the top time, clocking in at 17:58 and coming in 64th place overall. Freshman Ashley Moffett also finished in the top 100, ending the race in 87th place out of the 156 total runners with a time of 18:23.
“It was nice to preview the fast course, despite the kind of rough day for us as a team,” Shane said. “We will share what we learned about the course with the rest of the team, and it will definitely help us when the West Regionals come around.”
The Dons will race again as a team in the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, on Oct. 19 in Sunnyvale, Calif.
