Did Outtahere Sell Expired Food?
October 21st, 2009 at 7:11 pmUnrelated, I believe, but also of note was the food poisoning catastrophe at this summer’s FastTrack (they changed the name but it escapes me) when what seemed like nearly half of the new students attending the orientation, their parents and USF staff became ill after eating a Bon Appetit catered “make your own fajitas” dinner. Some where hospitalized, many missed the scavenger hunt the next day, and others fell victim to the fajitas during the hunt, requiring USF employees to drive around the city collecting sick students and delivering them to the hospital.
Holly Winslow and Margaret Higgins both spent some time in front of the microphone expressing their sincere regret for the mishap.
In my experience Holly and Bon Appetit have done a pretty good job and sometimes accidents happen, however, I believe the issue raised by this Op Ed requires an explanation. The article never says whether the food was actually expired or not, was it? And I will also point out that day old bread is quite popular…
USFtv Loses Advisers: Staff disappointed, yet hopeful about future
May 14th, 2009 at 1:54 pmJohn, I think you stand corrected on the bias of this article, as most of the senior leadership at USFtv was interviewed and quoted. As for burning bridges, this is not an opinion article, this is not the Foghorn saying we don’t like USFtv or that we think they are doing a poor job, this is a factual news report that clearly lays out the issues, and allows for the people involved (producers and advisers) to state their cases. It seems like Prof. Stone and Silver are basically saying “USFtv didn’t do what they should have done this year, we are frustrated and we are quitting because the students at USFtv didn’t show the level of commitment we required.” However, they never said they were quitting for these reasons. And the students at USFtv are saying “we had some issues, technical and otherwise, this year that we need to work on.” There is no dispute that USFtv has produced little content this year as compared to prior years and that is the point this article makes.
I’m sorry to see that Stone and Silver are leaving. I think they provide a link to the foundation and level of support that is needed at USFtv. It is understandable that this was a restructuring and learning year for USFtv. Dave Binegar, Bobby Lee and James Kilton, who all co-founded the station two years ago, were workaholics who contributed greatly to the station. When all three graduated there was a huge vacuum to fill and with Alex Platt doing Senate full-time that left even less support at the station. I know there are some talented people at USFtv and I hope that they regroup for a strong year next year.
As for relations and burning bridges, it’s our job to report the news. Would you want us to withhold printing this story because feelings would be hurt at USFtv? I hope not, and I hope USFtv would report on operations at the Foghorn in a similar fashion. This was a well researched, well presented and well written article. The USF community should know why USFtv produced little content this year.
I would like to know the outcome of this issue if anyo
ne has updates to add. Did USFtv get their stipends after all, and what conditions were set for getting them? Does the station have an adviser lined up for next year and who is going to lead the station?

Crossroads New Later Hours Popular, Unruly
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:51 pmI would also like to say that while the Foghorn has been fairly critical of Xroads this year I am pleased that they are giving the extended hours idea a shot and would also like to let it be known that I had not one but two excellent slices of Xroads pizza a few nights ago.
Crossroads New Later Hours Popular, Unruly
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:48 pmWell well well Dani and Chelsea, it’s not all about you now is it! Xroads is run by student workers who also have finals to take during finals week ie have more important things to do than serve you bitter Foghorn editors pizza and coffee.
JK - but that’s why they’re not open during finals.
ASUSF Budget Does Not Reflect Student Work
April 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pmI am the editor in chief of the Foghorn.
This article and the issue in general has nothing to do with Alex Platt. Alex, you are one of the hardest workers I have ever meet. You are a workaholic and I believe you try your hardest to make USF as good as it can be in your roll as president, at USFtv, through Women in Media and as a student at large. When you say you would work for free I believe you because I would also do my job for free and I think we share a passion for making our respective clubs as good as they can be.
However, the majority of posters here who argue in support of senate stipends (and low stipends for other accounts) are using the argument that Alex works really hard period. But in determining fair stipends we should, as a community, look at how much work one position carries in relation to another (within reason, lets not split hairs).
My message is simple, we work really hard ALSO and at the very least our stipends should not be cut, especially in a year when we have received more praise from the community for our hard work then ever before. Fr. Privett called this year’s Foghorn “Perhaps the best ever,” and everywhere I go on campus people tell me how much they enjoy the paper this year, Alex included, Greg W. included, senators included.
But I understand that we needed to reduce the budget this year, and that cuts needed to be made. That’s the reality of the situation. However, if we cut one club’s stipends (when their responsibilities/hours have not changed) then we should cut stipends at other accounts also.
The Finance Committee chose to cut Foghorn stipends, and not stipends at other accounts that I am aware of (but I have not seen every club budget). What is most frustrating about this is that there were 13 people in the room when budgets were decided and 5 of them were senators and one was the adviser to senate. And I have spoken with many of the people who were in that room and several of the non-senators said they felt intimidated to go along with the pro-senate group and were afraid to voice concern over senate stipends. These people also said they wished no senators were on the Finance Committee because it would allow them to be more fair about deciding budgets.
And that’s really the game-ender for me. All of the other arguments you try to make about senate being an “umbrella organization,” and working really hard et al is just white noise to me.

ASUSF Budget Does Not Reflect Student Work
April 15th, 2009 at 4:16 pmI just can’t understand how you justify paying senators so much in relation to execs at other funded accounts. I really can’t.

ORL Implements New System, Puts Housing Selection Online
March 4th, 2009 at 9:17 pmThe new roommate selection tools sound really cool, but does it mean ORL no longer takes the responsibility of pairing incoming freshmen? That takes some of the fun out of things I think.

Acquaintance Rape Not New on USF Campus
February 26th, 2009 at 9:18 amMessage from USF President Rev. Stephen Privett S.J. regarding rape on campus(Posted on USFConnect, USF’s internal communication system on Thursday, Feb. 26).
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
I know that shock waves from the recent revelations regarding acquaintance rape/assault on campus still reverberate across campus, as well they should. I have the greatest appreciation for the women who came forward and called this issue to the attention of the campus. I also applaud the student-initiated forum that provided the community with an immediate opportunity to begin to identify and discuss the underlying issues that we must address.
While no university can totally escape the shadow side of our culture, these dehumanizing influences are of paramount concern to a community such as USF that “respects and promotes the dignity of every person” and promotes a “common good that transcends the interests of particular individuals or groups” [University Values]. Violations of the dignity and rights of women are more than simply gender-specific issues; they are human issues that touch us all. The African-American abolitionist and poet, Frances Ellen Harper, underscored the reality of our common humanity when she wrote:
“We are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity, and society cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving the curse in its own soul.”
This is the time to redouble our efforts at promoting a University-wide conversation that aims to create an overall campus culture where everyone feels secure and confident in the knowledge that every other member of the University community understands and accepts responsibility for creating and sustaining a community that promotes the authentic human development of all its members and that welcomes women and men of every race, language, creed and way of life.
To promote that conversation, the cabinet met yesterday with the Chair of the President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, Ms. Lenli Corbett (Director of Compliance, Athletics), to consider further action steps in the aftermath of the recent tragedy. While these events have shocked and scarred our collective psyches, they have also heightened our awareness of our responsibility to engage the entire campus community in additional proactive measures that ensure the safety and well being of all. Violence against women is an assault on us all, and the solutions to that problem will only come from all of us working together to meet our responsibilities to and for one another.
USF’s Jesuit education is a powerful vehicle for opening minds and motivating hearts to change the world. Let that change begin here on campus with us. I encourage everyone to attend today’s student-led forum at 12:15 PM in University Center’s Parina Lounge and to challenge and change those aspects of our campus culture that contradict our core values and compromise our ideals.
Sincerely,
Stephen A. Privett, SJ
President

ROTC Ban Not the Way to Address Safer Campus
February 25th, 2009 at 8:42 pmMy high school U.S. history teacher once told our class that while he was not a fan of everything the military is ordered to do, he hoped some of us would join because we need smart, caring people in the army.
True, many poorly educated young men and women join the armed services, so why would we condemn ROTC, a program that offers future army leaders a college education?

Campus Chic: Rex Walters Edition
February 18th, 2009 at 7:05 pmThe shirts were mellow yellow, not gold. I think the Gold Out was a great idea and lots of students and alumni wore the shirts, but the coaching staff were wearing what could only be described as a “wardrobe malfunction.” LOL - very entertaining writing.

JUICYCAMPUS COMES TO AN END
Open Letter From JuicyCampus Founder
Juicy Campers,
What a wild ride this has been! In the past year and a half, JuicyCampus has become synonymous with college gossip, and is more popular than I could have ever expected. We’ve expanded to more than 500 campuses across the US , and have more than a million unique visitors coming to the site every month. It’s clear that we have provided a platform that students have found interesting, entertaining, and fun.
Unfortunately, even with great traffic and strong user loyalty, a business can’t survive and grow without a steady stream of revenue to support it. In these historically difficult economic times, online ad revenue has plummeted and venture capital funding has dissolved. JuicyCampus’ exponential growth outpaced our ability to muster the resources needed to survive this economic downturn, and as a result, we are closing down the site as of Feb. 5, 2009.
On behalf of everyone here at JuicyCampus, I would like to thank all of our users for reading, contributing to, and telling your friends about the site. And I’d like to thank everyone who has engaged in meaningful discussion about online privacy and internet censorship. JuicyCampus has raised issues that have passionate advocates on both sides, and I hope that dialogue will continue. While there are parts of JuicyCampus that none of us will miss – the mean-spirited posts and personal attacks – it has also been a place for the fun, lighthearted gossip of college life. I hope that is how it is remembered.
Keep it Juicy,
Matt Ivester

Campus Smoking Ban a Joint Decision
December 10th, 2008 at 11:10 pmthis new smoking ban is working out great - lets make a big deal about doing something at the administrative level and then never follow through. I was against the ban in the first place, but since it was enacted I see more people smoking on campus. Do teens take pleasure in breaking rules?
