An ordinary conference room in Fromm Hall took on the vibe of a hip, jazzy cafe as friends, new and old, came together for Expressions open mic night.
USF students arrived en masse, along with friends and family. Even a group of San Francisco State students bussed in from across town. Guests mingled, piling up plates [...]

The Harney Science Center is home to the departments of biology, chemistry, computer science, exercise and sport science, environmental science, mathematics, physics and astronomy. Though these fields require innovation and ingenuity in their practice, the building which houses them at USF is far from cutting edge.

“We are the proud brown sisters of Lambda Theta Nu!” shouted three Latina USF students in Harney Plaza last Thursday, stomping their feet and clapping their hands in a traditional “stepping” routine.

With compost and recycling bins collecting waste, solar panels lining many a rooftop, and locally-grown organic produce being served up in the cafeteria, USF appears to be on the right track in its quest for environmental responsibility.

Monday afternoon around 4 many students received jarring alerts in the form of text messages sent from USF's Department of Public Safety to their personal cell phones. The messages informed students that the campus was in a state of emergency and they should evacuate immediately.

Senior business major Takuya Oka might be the next Craig Newmark. Like the San Franciscan internet entrepreneur who founded Craigslist.org, Oka recently founded an online classified site.

After over 40 years, USF's first radio station, KDNZ, is signing off for good this semester. General manager of the student-run station, senior Renae Santa Cruz, cited a lack of student involvement -- in terms of production and audience -- as the main cause for the station's closure.

Junior Kevin Kunze has recurring nightmares about having laser eye surgery go awry. Though he wears contact lenses to correct his vision, he would not consider getting his eyes permanently fixed with the slightly risky procedure. “It’s not worth the risk when you count on your eyes for your future,” he said. He’ll certainly need them for his upcoming project, his first feature length film, Id, which he hopes to start filming as soon as this month.

In one of the most heavily-trafficked parts of USF campus, next to the Market Cafe in the University Center, the new Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Resource Center (GSWRC) has opened its doors.
